What made this book most interesting to me is how they took something so bizarre, like gleaning people instead of people having a natural death and related it to being better than the "past". The world is definitely advancing with our technology, but to think this would be the normal in the future is too crazy to think. Something I will remember most about this book is just how much I liked it. This is a book I never saw myself reading, so when I heard I had to read it I was very excited, but now that I'm done, I didn't want to put it down. Everything about it, the plot, characters, and conflict was very fun to read. A story element of the characters could make it young adult, because it includes relationship problems, and figuring out who you are as a person. It also took place in the future but mentioned things from their past, which is still our present.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that it's interesting how they took natural death and made it non-existent, and instead they hired people to "glean" others. I also agree with you on how the world is advancing very quickly with technology.
DeleteI also found it bizarre how they related gleaning to being better than the past. It is a little unsettling.
DeleteAwesome! I'm glad you enjoyed the book even though you might not have expected to. I love how this book fits a wide variety of audiences. It has a lot of elements that appeals to people in general, like romance, action, or mystery. I think that's a good tool for an author to use if they want to get their name out.
DeleteI agree with this! There are miniature plot points that can intrigue almost any reader, which is what I think makes it so well balanced.
DeleteThe plot/theme of the book, which is mental illness & recovery from it, is what makes it young adult. Many teenagers have experienced mental illness at some point, and the book tackles it in a way that is understandable for a teenage audience without talking down to the audience or over complicating the issue. What intrigued me most is, as I've stated previously, Caden himself, from the first few pages, his character and thought process is enrapturing, and kept me reading for hours. I will remember the way in which this book discussed mental illness and Caden's recovery from it very tactfully. It never said he was cured, that he was fixed completely, but he was at a point where he could live his life in peace, at least for a while. The last few lines of the book are as follows.
ReplyDelete"He will always be waiting, I realize. He will never go away. And in that time, I may find myself his first mate whether I want to or not, journeying to points exotic so that I might make another dive, and another, and another. And maybe one day I'll dive so deep that the Abyssal Serpent will catch me, and I'll never find my way back. No sense in denying that such things happen.
But it's not going to happen today--- and there is a deep, abiding comfort in that. Deep enough to carry me through till tomorrow."
I also enjoyed how the author described the mental illness in a way that was not condescending as much as it was empathizing with the struggles that everyone goes through. It was said that Caden will never be just like he was before but that's ok
DeleteThe elements that made the story young adult was the whole mood of the story. The scandal, the relationships, just about everything in the book. Rowan and Citra's relationship was so complicated and neither of them really knew what they wanted, and then when they were separated everything became even more complicated between them. I also want to talk about the comparison between Rowan and Citra, and Scythe Faraday and Scythe Curie because I find that their relationships are very similar, it's almost like it were history repeating itself just in a slightly different way.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the mood played a big role of the story. The relationships with everyone were so complicated that it just made it hard.
DeleteI also agree how Scythe Faraday and Scythe Curie's relationship was like Rowan and Citra. They knew they weren't supposed to be together, but they still wanted to anyway.
DeleteI agree with you on how Citra and Rowan's relationship was a lot like Scythe Curie and Scythe Faraday's relationship. I also agree with you about how rowan and Citra's relationship was very complicated and them getting separated had a real big impact on that.
DeleteI love the connection between Citra and Rowan and Scythe Faraday and Scythe Curie. It lets us allude to what may happen if their relationship ever were to blossom while still giving us hope for them in the future.
DeleteWhat intrigued me the most about this book was that it was so different then anything I have read before. I really enjoyed the action and the mystery of the book. It's suspenseful because you don't know who will win and become a scythe. It's shows and you get to experience the growth both Citra and Rowan are accomplishing through their training with Scythe Faraday and their new scythes. I never would Have thought I would've enjoyed this book as much as I did. The thing I will remember the most about this book is the way the book ended. I never expected it to end with Rowans escape and I'm excited to read the second book to find out what action him and Citra take next. The thing I think that made this book young adult is the fact that you don't know what the future holds. The technology of the world in this book is very advanced and you never know if the world we will live in today will have similar aspects.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did, but I agree all the action and mystery, and never knowing what would happen next made this book very interesting, and very enjoyable to read.
DeleteI also thought this book was different than anything I have read before, and I wasn't sure how I would like it but the action and suspense kept me hooked.
DeleteI was expecting this book to be boring but once I started reading it, I just wanted to read more because there was so much action.
DeleteI think what makes this book "young adult" is the drama of the forbidden relationships between the main characters. What intrigued me most about this book was how much Rowan and Citra would give up for each other, having only known each other for less than a year. They failed the first two tests so the other wouldn't look bad. I think that that is brave.
ReplyDeleteI think what makes this book young adult is the conflict like when Goddard gleaned the plane and the toniest church and when rowan killed Goddard. the thing intrigued me most was how people could be revied if they die and how there was no wars just peace. I will remember how much action there was and rowan and Citra's relationship.
ReplyDeleteI agree; those actions scenes do appeal to young adults. The reviving was an interesting concept that I don't think I have ever seen in any other story. I have seen a single person or a group gain immortality, but I have never seen the whole world gain immortality in a story.
DeleteI feel what made this book young adults was the topic. Challenger Deep is a story of Caden and his struggles with mental illness this is a difficult topic to cover in a way that isn't scary. The way characters in the book dealt with topics such as mental illness in a constructive way. what intrigued me the most was the story of the ship seeing how much control Caden has lost in his life to his cabin or the voices in his head. I feel like I will remember the message that being not ok is ok.
ReplyDeleteThe characters themselves are young adults. While their general situation (as in, being a scythe apprentice) isn't very relatable, their general attitude and interactions with others are.
ReplyDeleteI will remember the philosophy of the scythes the most. I still don't think gleaming is an ok thing to do. I think there are better ways to fix overpopulation problems other than that. However, they do have interesting points, and all of the different scythes view their jobs differently.
Yes, I liked seeing how the scythes really viewed the topic of gleaning. It's weird too see that as well knowing that most scythes pick someone who doesn't want to be one but they all turn out to have different views of the situation.
DeleteWhat makes this book young adult is that it follows the life of two teenage characters who are going through life solving there own problems while simultaneously dealing with family struggles, blossoming feelings, and their own mental issues. While the concept of gleaning and becoming a scythe is unrelatable, seeing Citra and Rowan grow throughout the book and hearing about topics like forbidden love and an unknown world is was draws younger readers in. This book gives me similar vibes to the hunger games series, which is a young adult favorite as well as a popular movie. The set, plot, and character development are all very interesting for younger readers like myself and over the book has a faced passed story line that draws readers in.
ReplyDeletenow that I'm thinking of it where did the setting actually take place, I know they said midmerica but is that just what they call it in the future? I loved reading of Citra and Rowan falling in love while they didn't talk to each other much they both had a deeper understanding between them which really drew me in, and I'm sure drew others in as well.
DeleteI think what makes this book young adult was that the storyline followed Citra and Rowen two teens making their way through struggles. They also slowly fell in love which truly makes this book young adult because a lot of young teens can relate to the emotions that they are feeling. What intrigued me the most was the whole aspect of gleaning and how you can't die without being killed by a scythe. I think the author had a great idea with this one and wrote the story very well. I also liked how they chose new scythes and how they had to be truly good people to become one. I will remember the bond between the kids and scythe Faraday the most. Despite having known each other a long time they formed this bond that was really sweet like at the end when scythe Faraday was the getaway driver that was just the perfect ending and showed how close they really were.
ReplyDeletewhat intrigued me the most about this book is like hat if this actually happens everything in this book feels like someday it could happen. Also the way details are given out to you its slow but its gives you just the right amount of details to make want to keep reading
