A Silent Voice 3

What components does your book have to make it a page-turner?  Or was this book a little slow to get started?  Was there a point where you just couldn't put it down?  Or did you struggle getting through it?  Please provide examples.

  1. The main characters have a dynamic that makes the book a page-turner. Shoya has to face what he did in the past and attempt to reconcile for his previous actions, whereas Shoko wants to improve herself so that she can express herself more freely. Shoya is a factor in her life that encourages her to improve, because he wants her to be happy, and Shoko wants both of them to be happy.

    1. I agree the scenes between the two of them wanted me to read more always. Their dynamic together even if it was bullying was interesting to see how'd they react to each other.

    2. I agree; their relationship is definitely interesting. Even though the series isn't a romance, there are romantic feelings on both sides, yet the series never fully acts on it--to preserve the theme of the story. I think this book does an excellent job of building their relationship and keeping an interesting dynamic.

  2. I think book is a page turner. The storyline has good pacing and because of the lack of distinct chapters I had a tendency to accidently wander into the next chapter and be thrown a whole new conflict that made me want to keep going. Because it's a manga I also feel that my motivation to read it was higher because the pages go by very quickly and I wanted to see just how far I could get in comparison to a normal novel. I couldn't put it down at the end when Shoya wants to go see Shoko to apologize and fix what he did. I didn't see that part coming and was very intrigued when it happened.

    1. I agree the storyline did have a good pacing. There was a lot of new conflicts, but for me with this book they didn't really motivate me to keep reading, but I do agree I liked seeing how fast I could read the book, and I did not see the ending coming, when Shoya wanted to apologize to Shoko.

    2. I love that you loved the story as much as I did. The plot goes by quickly and it's easy to get drawn into the story--which is why I love graphic novels so much.

  3. Throughout the whole, I was engaged. One quality I love in books is where every scene is important to the story in someway, and the story wouldn't be the same if the scene were to be removed. This series is one of those. I feel like every frame has a purpose, and you have to stay attentive to each word and illustration in order to understand the story fully. For example, there is a frame where Shoya's mom's ear is bleeding. The book doesn't say it's bleeding, but you have to pick up on it by reading the illustration. You also have to infer for yourself that Shoko's mom was furious and ripped out Shoya's mom's earring. If you miss the lost earring or the blood drops on her shoulder from the drawing, you miss a major part of the plot. I love that about manga; it's almost impossible to absent mindedly read.

    1. This book had a lot of little detail in it, but I'm not sure if I liked it or not. I feel like there was a lot that I should have picked up, but I missed it, because I wasn't looking to closely to the images. I did like the illustrations, but I'm not sure if I like how you have to depend on them to get a good understanding of the story.

    2. I do like that however, I feel that those things are very easy to overlook. I would've never noticed that had you not pointed it out to me, no matter how slowly I went through each page. It's hard to find the point between paying too much attention and not enough.

  4. This book was a little hard for me to get through. I think for me I liked the fast pace of it, and how fast I got it done, but I don't normally read these types of books, and they don't interest me as much as other books do. I did like the overall meaning of the book. I think it had a great lesson. I definitely didn't see the ending coming, which intrigued me, but throughout the book it was a little harder for me to get through.

    1. Yes, on some level I did enjoy the fast pace of the book, but the ending was too predictable. I don't like the fact it didn't last a long time it took me a day to read and honestly looking back on it now it was quite boring with the pictures and everything.

    2. I think the fast pace was what made me not like the book as much. It made it hard for me to get into it and understand what was happening. Although the lesson was good, I feel that they could've taken their time showing it.

    3. I agree. I liked that the oace was very fast and you could read the whole thing in one sitting. I also found it a little hard to get through though. I didnt really "read" the pictures and mainly foucused on the words. I liked the message but was left wanting more out of this book.

  5. I mean there isn't really a way to struggle getting through a graphic novel. The storyline while compelling didn't have me truly hooked from how fast paced the story went, I get it's a graphic novel in all, but they could've gone further into the story, so I didn't like that. I did like the part of the book near the end where we see Shoya wiping the mean words off his desk and how that reflects back to the middle where Shoya finds out Shoko was really wiping down his desk not hers that was good foreshadowing in the book. Other than that, the story was mediocre, not really moving, and conflicting in terms of the characters. That teacher should've truly been fired by telling Shoya this was something they just have to deal with and getting offended when he might've had to learn sign language.

    1. I also found the story very fast paced and just hard to really get hooked. The teacher definitely should've been fired and the overall story was basic.

    2. I can agree with this. Myself I found that I had to force myself to read slower than usually just to not speed through the story.

    3. I agree. I found myself just trying to get through it and finish and then I would have to slow down to try to understand whats happening. I also thought they could hve went into more detail and made the story more developed.

  6. I didn't really find this book to be a page-turner. It had a good lesson in it but it was just hard to understand, mainly because of the way it was written. After I got used to the style of it and started to understand what was going on, I still didn't find it to be very exciting. Although I did like that it ended kind of on a cliff-hanger, I think that I could easily go without reading the next book in the sequel.

    1. I 100% agree with you. I think this book was not a page-turner although it had a great lesson to it. I did like the cliff-hanger, but I could also go without reading the second one because it didn't fascinate me.

  7. I think that the length and that the book doesnt have many words on a page makes it a page turner. I finished it in one sitting. I think this book was a slow start, but I got through it fast so I didnt think I should put it down. I did find myself thinking there is only like 50 pages left push through. I wasnt very blown away by this book, buit that could also be because I was kinda conffused throughout the whole thing. I thought it jumped around a lot and was hard to follow. I wouldnt say that I struggled to get through it just didnt really enjoy reading it.

    1. I also finished this book in one sitting. I was also not very blown away by this book and also caught myself counting the pages until it was over. The storyline sometimes jumped from place to place which confused me throughout the book.

  8. I didn't really think this book was a page-turner. It had a great lesson that anyone can learn from, but I personally did not find this book as interesting. The way it was written kind of confused me in the beginning, but I soon got used to it. I did not struggle getting through it although, I had to learn to read slower throughout the book to understand fully what was going on.

  9. For me, this book was a 20-25 minute read and it wasn't until the last 20 pages that i enjoyed the book for its message, during this part Shoyas world was turned upside down when he realizes that because of how he was acting no one liked him anymore. i felt like I was going to be happy to be done reading it. but it was a fairly easy to understand book

  10. i don't think this book was a page turner except for a few parts when shoya got in trouble. i think the book was slow to get started at first but then the rest of the book went pretty fast. i struggled to understand what was happening at first.

  12. The book had a good plot but I just thought it was slow and a little difficult to read and understand. It was a fast read but it just got a little boring until he got older and everyone didn't like him. When I understood how the book was laid out I read it a lot better.
