It Ends with Us 1/Reminders of Him 1

What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel?  How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

Comments

  1. I think that this book is a good example of contemporary young adult literature. It ends with us was published in 2016. Which makes it a recent book. I loved this book and I think it is a good representation of contemporary literature. I feel that this book was targeted towards a younger audience but its definitely not a children's story which would make it young adult. Lily and Atlas's relationship is told through her journals from when she was 15 and he was 18. It makes her a little more relatable but then it jumps back to present time when she is 23 years old and in a relationship with Ryle. It is a romance book that goes over actual problems in relationships and has a good message for people. I think this book is a very good example of contemporary young adult literature. I would recommend this book to anyone. I really enjoyed this read.

    1. I agree with Bree; I think this book is a perfect representation of contemporary literature. The relationship seems very modern. For example, Ryle and Lily rush into their marriage very quickly, they have relationship issues because of it, and they eventually divorce.

    2. Yes, I agree 100% with Bree the time jumps between when Lilly was a teenager and now an adult is a perfect representation of contemporary young adult lit. Plus the time jumps were told very well and made it a captivating read.

    3. I agree with you that this book is targeted towards young adults but it's also not a children's story. I would also recommend this book to anyone and everyone and I really enjoyed reading this book.

    4. I agree with this. I think the cuts between present and past are very easy to follow and the story is something that many teens who enjoy romance would like.

  2. This book is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because it deals with a more sensitive but realistic topic that a younger group of kids can relate to. This book talks about Spousal/home abuse and teaches a younger audience all sides of the good bad and ugly topic. It also talks about young love between teenagers that most can relate to and how to grow or in this books case go back to it. In today's book world it represents this because it caters to a young and older group and is able to tie both groups together into loving this storyline. It ends with us also somewhat touches on co-parenting and loving/protecting your child which most definitely could pull at an older readers heartstring.

    1. I agree that the book fairly represents young relationships and the problems that go with it. Although, I do wish the book would have done a better job at examining these problems and helping guide the reader towards solutions for them.

    3. I agree I thought that it did a beautiful of putting together both groups of people. I think a lot of people can relate to the seperated parents and co-parenting. I liked that it also covered relatable topics for everyone.

    4. I agree with you this book covers many topics that any audience could relate to, younger or older. I agree she did a good job of putting both those groups of people together. The young love is something teens can relate to while co-parenting is something an older audience could relate too.

  3. Personally, I care more for classics than modern books, and some of the elements in this book reassure me of that belief. At the same time, I found parts of the book enjoyable, and those parts give me hope. I believe this book is a perfect example of what a contemporary novel is and of what I love and hate in the genre.
The book contained many believable, modern scenes, which is essential to a contemporary novel. For example, in the scene where Lily re-met Atlas, Lily's mother is introducing her to a new restaurant in the city. This scene seems very familiar in other stories and in real life.
The book featured references to elements that define the current culture. For example, the Ellen DeGeneres show is mentioned many times, and she is definitely a prominent figure in this era.
The book also discusses themes that are commonly discussed today. For example, domestic abuse and poverty in teens are talked about.
Lastly, there are parts that I didn't like that I think this book shares with other contemporary pieces. The writing wasn't very elegant, and sometimes wasn't very necessary. A lot of contemporary novels do this--they add a lot of unnecessary scenes and explain reactions when they do not need to. For example, whenever something shocking happens, the narrator will explain everyone's reactions including her own, when I do not think it's needed.

    1. I agree with your comment for many reasons but more importantly because you saw both sides of contemporary and non-contemporary. I also agree that the writing wasn't very elegant, but I think that's just because it's a modern book and unless you're aiming for that writing style you won't write like that.

  5. I think this book is a good example of young adult. It does back and forth throughout the book from her present life with Ryle to her teenage life with Atlas. It is targeted towards young adult readers. This book is relatable to many because of the relationships she encounters with everyone. She has a hard life at home when she was younger, and Atlas was always there for her. When she gets older the same thing happens. This book talks about problems relationships can have. I thought this book was a very good read and I enjoyed reading it.

    1. I liked that the book covered her past relationship and her present relationship in a way that wasnt confusing. I was a little bit upset that her parents relationship started to have simular problems her parents relationships. I also really enjoyed this book.

    2. I found this book very enjoyable to read as well. This book is relatable to many people. I liked the going back and forth as well and also didn't find it that confusing. I liked all the detail in the story, and would recommend this book to anyone to asked me.

  6. The book is a good example of young adult. It has a lot of twists and stuff you would never expect to happen. The book was written specifically for young adults, even the character is a young adult. The book has a lot of abuse, heartbreak, and love, which is not a good mix of emotions, but it made the book a lot better. The fact that history repeated itself with Lilys parents' marriage to her own marriage made Lily a lot more understanding to her mother's actions.

    1. Lily did have a different view of her mother after she was put in a similar situation as her. I think that part of the story taught a good lesson about judgement.

  7. I think this book is a good example of contemporary young adult. It has emotion, details (not too much), and relatable characters. I do think since Kenna already has a kid it isn't relatable for a lot of teenage kids, but she was a little younger when Diem was born. Kenna talks her life when she was younger and how she was neglected by her mom. She doesn't want her daughter to ever go through that, so she wants to be in Diem's life. Kenna went into foster care as a child, as many children are in today. Now, she has a four-year-old kid, as a single mother. There might be other single moms who feel like they aren't doing a good enough job, but Kenna shows how after anything you do, your life can be brought back together, and you can continue on and push through the past.

  8. I think this is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because it shows realistic childhood trauma that could be relatable to some kids/adults who are/were in similar situations. It also shows Lily keeping a journal because she doesn't have a certain person she can talk to about her thoughts. I feel like this might be relatable to some teens and maybe even adults.

    1. I found the realism that was in Lily's childhood a very good addition because sometimes these books just gloss over how their people came to be.

  9. There are a lot of aspects that make this a good contemporary young adult book. It stays current with the time periods, using this like the Ellen show and text messages to make it seem more present. The themes also are more commonly talked about now than they ever were in the past 100 years: abuse from parental figures or spouses, homelessness, and the use of things like weed, alcohol, and sex in a non judgmental way. I think it's a good example of contemporary literature and would be something most teens can relate to in some way.

  10. I think that it ends with us is a good example of young adult literature because the aspects of the story like lily and atlases story being set between people who are 15 and 18 made the book more relatable. with the jump in age too when LIly is 23 I felt that the book had little fear of failing I felt like it was a little too predictable and there was nothing to set it apart from another romance novel.
