Our main character, Darby, is very unapologetic. She's open about being drunk, stealing alcohol, smoking weed, swearing, fighting with her mother, etc. She appeals to teenage audiences through that rebelliousness and is able to talk about things that can be considered 'taboo' in older generations. Often times strong themes of gore are also more well liked by younger readers, of which this book has a lot. The unknown aspects that slowly get introduced are the things that really made me drawn to this book. Every chapter is something new to discover that significantly shifts the plot, and I loved it. I will most remember Darby's resilience through this book and how she put all of her personal quandary's aside to help a little girl, playing the perfect role of hero.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on how Darby is very unapologetic. She isn't afraid to admit to things and say what's on her mind.
DeleteI also agree with you about how every chapter you discover something new and that's what made me really enjoy this book
DeleteI agree. Darby was very easy to relate to and is made for the teenage audience. When she talked about her mother and how they weren't super close, but also that she dropped everything to go be with her and that's how she got at the rest stop in the first place.
DeleteYes, Darby's resilience will be a memorable aspect. I can't get over how her mom was dying, and she was in the Rockies trying to save a kidnapped 9-year-old pretty much on her own with no cell reception. And when anything stopped her path like finding out Ashley and Lars were brothers while shocked that didn't stop her from giving up.
DeleteWith all of Darby's rebellioness, I wasn't expecting her to be as heroic as she was in the story. I thought that she was a good person who would do what she could to help, but I didn't expect her to be as brave and clever as she was through the story. However, I really like the way she turned out as a character.
DeleteThe story elements in this novel that make it young adult are the characters, conflict, and theme. The characters are very strong. Even the kidnappers. They all have a goal and set out to achieve it. Darby never gives up and she ends up saving herself and Jay, the little girl who was kidnapped. The conflict also has a big impact on the story. We see many things similar to the conflict in the book on the news. the theme is also very important. I think the theme of this book is to never give up and good things will always turn up in the end. Darby never gave up and she impacted her own life and Jays all in one night. People will know to always fight for things they are passionate about after reading this book. The thing that intrigued me the most about this book is that you never knew what would happen next. Something surprising always happened throughout this entire book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the part about how this book makes you want to fight for things you're passionate about after reading about Darby's head strong attitude. It gives you hope even when the situation seems impossible and makes it seem like there is always a way to work in out in the end.
DeleteI agree with you saying the book intrigued you because throughout the book Darby didn't know who to trust and not to trust.
Deletethe story in no Exit is intense and action pack there isn't one moment where you're like i wasn't expecting that. This book teaches you to fight for what's right if someone's in trouble help them. no exit is a book that everyone can read its entertaning and fun to read I would recommend this book to anyone plus this book had many cliff hangers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the part about how its very action packed and unexpected twists and turns however I disagree with the part about recommending this book to anyone. It's a gory book. I had to set it down a couple of times due to graphic visuals and usually I am someone who does okay with those types of things. I would recommend this book to someone who seriously likes gore, and be cautious about anyone who is iffy.
DeleteDarby is unstoppable in No Exit she sees her goal of saving jay and is willing to do anything she can to make sure that Jay makes it out of there alive. this comes down to her sacrificing her own life in the end just to put a stop to Ashely. I feel like that is what makes the book so young adult because it feels like it's more about fighting for what you want against any opposition. what intrigued me the most was Darby's selflessness she went through all that she did just to help someone she would have never known about otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The whole book everything worked against her. Even when she was about to die numerous times she never gave up because she knew that someone had to be there for Jay.
DeleteWhen Darby was pretty much sacrificing herself, I feel you could really feel the emotion trying to be portrayed through the book. Darby just wanted to be with her mom again and that part was so genuine compared to the rest of this cut-throat novel.
DeleteThe book is young adult because throughout the book Darby faces so much with Ashley and Lars and yet she doesn't give up. Shes look death in the eyes so many times and still is fixated on saving this little girl she's never met. She was very courageous to battle with Ashley and Lars for ten hours straight.
ReplyDeleteThe main character Darby and the girl that had been abducted Jay are what make this book young adult. Darby may be in college but she is also a student and I found that semi-relatable. I also liked how real she was. She stood her ground and didn't let anyone sway her judgement. Darby also goes through so much in such little time. I think the pace of the book also makes it young adult. There was a plot twist every 20 or so pages. It was never boring or had nothing going on. I did notice though that it was a little slow burn at certain points but that's because it has such a twisted and interesting plot line. I was intrigued the most by how realistic this situation could be. I will remember most about this book to go with my gut and that you can't always trust everyone.
ReplyDeleteI agree this book had many twists and turns, but I never really found it boring at any points, just because it wasn't as packed with action as other parts. I also agree with you the characters Jay and Darby made this book young adult. I really liked how Darby spoke her ground and wasn't scared to stand up to Ashley or Lars.
DeleteI think the moods of these characters definitely make it young adult. while students reading this book may not know the exact emotions everyone knows the feelings of fear and confusion while terrifying people like to read about that. What intrigued me the most about this book was the death scenes and seeing how Darby and Ashley interacted with each other. Also, just reading how Ashley viewed their relationship was very interesting. I will remember the ending the most I just thing the visiting of Darby's moms grave with Jay was dark but so cute and wholesome.
ReplyDeleteI agree Ashley and Darby's interactions were really intriguing. At the end when Ashley was saying how they could have been a good couple, and this isn't normally him was interesting to me. The things Ashley was doing to everyone made me really interested but also grossed out how anyone could do those things.
DeleteI think that what Ashley was saying to Darby about how he isn't usually like this is very interesting, considering he killed 2 people with a smile on his face. I find Ashley horrific.
DeleteThere aren't many story elements that make it young adult. The latter half of the book has many gory elements that may dissuade some readers, especially younger ones, from continuing the book. The only element of the story that makes it young adult is the difficulty of the read. The book doesn't try to be more than it is, and keeps descriptions simple, but effective. The part that intrigued me the most was the twists, the story took a few turns that I was and wasn't expecting. It always found a way to move the plot forward without it feeling forced or contrived. I'll most likely remember the character of Ashley, as he's a memorable trickster of a person, he constantly deceived those around him and his sociopathic sense of humor makes him a fun villain.
ReplyDeleteAshley is a fun villain. He takes everything very lightly throughout the story rather than being a brooding, bleak character. It's interesting how he was attracted to Darcy the whole time he was trying to kill her. I was expecting her to use that to her advantage to put his guard down at some point, but that never happened.
DeleteThe story elements that make this book young adult is the characters and theme. Darby is a very ambitious and rebellious girl. When she puts her mind on the idea that she can be the one to save Jay she keeps that thought on her mind and does just that. She is very brave and strong and did a lot that I'm not sure how many other people would do. Just like Darby she shows that whatever you want to fight for and accomplish, you have to put a lot into it but if you work hard enough, good can come out of it. What intrigued me most about this book was everything Darby did to help save Jay and herself. They were both put through so much in so little time, but neither of them gave up getting out of the rest stop alive. It did get a little gory at the end, but I think it helped to show the torture they went through, and what they did to survive.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Darby was very brave and strong for saving the little girl. She never gave up and I think that is an important lesson.
DeleteI also think that Darby is very brave and ambitious. She believes she can save Jay and she did just that.
DeleteThe main character's age is what makes the story fit for its audience. The reader is supposed to put themselves in her perspective and feel her adrenaline. The reader is also supposed to play along with the story and think about how they would escape the rest stop. It makes that whole process easier if the reader is around the same age as the main character.
ReplyDeleteI think, at parts, we (the audience) are supposed to put ourselves in Ashley's perspective and imagine how we are supposed to prevent Darby from escaping. There are a few parts in the story in which the story's third person perspective is limited to him.
I will remember the contriving personality of Darcy which helped her escape. She was able to think ahead and plan the smartest move for the most part (I still think she should have shot Ashley immediately when she had the chance, rather than giving him a talk before).
I think what makes this book young adult is the main characters. Darby had a rough past and a poor relationship with her mother. I feel like some teens could be able to relate to her. I think the most intriguing part was how Darby was risking her life for these strangers she had just met. There was a part where she was about to escape and save herself, but she changed her mind because she couldn't stand the thought of leaving Ed and Sandi even though she barely knew them.
ReplyDeletethe characters and the plot made this book young adult. the author made sure you always kind of "got close" with the characters so every death, betrayal, and major event was dramatic and unexpected such as makeing ashley a good guy and then you end up finding out he's more ruthless than lars. i think this was the best book out of all of them so i will problably remember this book the most out of all the others.
