Scythe 2/Challenger Deep 2

Do you believe in 100 years, this novel will be considered a "classic"?  Will it stand the test of time and be something that students will be reading in an English class of the future?  Why or why not?

Comments

  1. More than likely, this book will not be considered a classic, simply because many pieces of literature fall to the wayside as others take the limelight. I have no doubt it will still be considered a good book, but "classic" is a very exclusive title. Take To Kill a Mockingbird, many books from that time period are considered classics today, but how many other books were written in that period that are good, but aren't considered classics? More than likely, students of the future won't be reading Challenger Deep for an English class because of school boards. In my opinion, I wouldn't want entire classes to be forced to read this book, it could be very detrimental if you read it at a time where you have a poor mental state, simply because of the topics it covers. It has mentions of rape and a depiction of suicide, which while it isn't enough to get it banned (as it handles them seriously) it would be enough to prevent it from being required reading.

    1. This book while yes sci-fi and different could still be considered a good classic. In 2022 lots of different genre books are getting thrown in the mix for classics. With how good of a series this is rated I think Scythe could definitely have a chance. But no, this book will most likely not be read in English class but if there is the topic of sci-fi and students have to read from that genre this would be a great book.

  2. Maybe there could be a chance, but to think about other books considered classics, I don't know. Hardly no one I know even knows what the book Scythe is. I think it takes a lot to make a book so great that lots of people desire to read it. If you are into this genre of book, I think it could be considered a great book for this kind, but with all books I don't know if it could be a classic.

    1. I agree with you that this book is a great book but I don't think it has what it takes to become a classic. I also agree that it will be considered great for the genre it's in.

    2. I agree that in its genre it could be considered great, but just not overall.

    3. I think you're spot on with your prediction for its place within its genre. I foresee a possibility for a television or movie adaptation, and I think that will help secure it as a classic within the sci-fi genre.

    4. I agree I think that this was a great book but doesnt have a great likelyhood of being a classic. Even though this was an amazing book.

  3. No. sadly as good the book is I don't think it will become a classic. To consider other classics to Scythe there couldn't be a chance. I do recommend this book but not to read to a class of students especially if they're a younger group. The book talks about a lot about killing considering that's what the book is about but at some parts it gets into detail, and some may find it triggering to listen too.

    1. I agree with you that there is a lot of talk and action of killing which might turn people away enough to not become a classic. I would also recommend this book to many others.

    2. I would also recommend this book to others but considering all the bad action I don't think everyone would find it enjoyable, and I also think some may find it triggering.

    3. I honestly didn't find the violence that gruesome or offensive. Of all the aspects that could prevent it from becoming a classic, I don't think that will hold it back. I think one preventing aspect could be a lack of a prominent message. The book relies on action and mystery to drive it, and the themes are less important to the overall enjoyment of the book. I think if anything were to obscure-ize the story, it would be that aspect.

    4. I agree that the overall plot dealing with death could be a turn away from younger audiences, but I think in a high school setting this book would do wonderful, just like it's done in this class!

    5. I agree the idea of the book isnt something that i can see being taught in a classroom. Even though this book is young adult I cant see it being taught to the people that are considered young adult in a classroom setting.

  4. I don't think this book will become a classic in 100 years. The Giver, for example, is a classic book that is also a utopia like Scythe, but I think unlike Scythe the Giver has a greater theme and lesson of the book. In Scythe there is a lot of killing and I don't think that appeals to everyone. This book is a great novel and I'm very excited to read the second one. I would recommend it to anyone but unfortunately I don't think this book will be considered a classic.

    1. I agree with you, because the theme and lesson wouldn't be as great as classic books, as there is a lot of killing, and not everyone would fine that fun to read, although it is still a great book.

    2. I agree that the lesson and theme would not be as influential as other classic novels and the killing would be unappealing to most.

    3. i agree that the futuristic theme and all the killing would not interest a lot of people.

  5. I do not think that Scythe would ever be considered a classic. It is gruesome and I think that the world that is created in the book is too unrealistic. Although it is a great book, I just cannot see it being a classic.

  6. the book scythe probably wont be a classic although it is a great book. English classes might read in the future but in the end it will probably be forgotten about and know one will read it. it does have potential to be a classic.

  7. I think it has a chance. In the realm of YA literature, at least, it will become a classic. The following is the criteria of a classic that I think this book fills.
-Prestigious awards: Books that become classics often win awards that cement their place in history. For example, Grapes of Wrath won a Pulitzer Prize and The Giver won the Newberry Honor Award. This piece won the Michael Printz Award, which is a prestigious award given the best YA literature made in that year. It certainly deserves the honor, and I think this will help launch it as a classic in the realm of YA literature.
-Representing the sentiment of the era: "1984" by George Orwell represents the fear of governmental control during a time of communist uprising. "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving represents the fast changes after the Revolutionary War in America and the fear/caution many felt in the new, experimental government. I think this book represents the fear of technology and AI which many people express today. And for that reason, I think this book will still be around in a hundred years.
-Driving story which becomes made into a movie: Many books might have been lost if it weren't for the popularity of its movie-ization. Take "Dune" or "Gone with the Wind", for example. Although this story hasn't graced the big screen yet, I think it has grand potential for it in the coming future.

    1. this is all really great arguments! I think that this book could definitely be a fan favorite, just seeing how the people in the class (who typically stray away from Sci-Fi) loved it.

  8. I think that challenger deep will become a classic because the subject the story follows is not explored thoroughly enough. I feel that the book does a good job describing and explaining mental illness but I feel like because of the topic may affect it in becoming a classic. There is a chance that in the future someone may look back on the book and remains about how crudely we handle the treatment of our mentaly ill but other than that i feel like the book will fade into obscurity.

  9. This book I don't believe will be read in English class, but I can definitely maybe see it being a classic. I can see it being a classic because I don't know, I think the story could carry on for a good amount of time. Usually when reading a book i think it could be a one and done with no series but this book I can tell has a long storyline that needs to be told. Plus, with this book taking place in a futuristic it can stand the test of time because who knows that could be our future.

  10. While I don't think this book would necessarily be a classic I do see future children reading and enjoying this book. Though it's not the kind of story that English classes would discuss, the plot is very strong and I think this type of Sci-Fi book could be a fan favorite for many years. The term 'Classic' is very exclusive in my opinion and I think in order for this novel to be considered that it would have to include one huge key lesson, which this book doesn't. Instead it has many mini lessons that the reader can pick up along the way. This book is also a part of a series and I find that most classic novels stand alone or the included books are not widely loved or part of the main story.

    1. I agree there isn't truly a big lesson to this book which I feel like could've maybe been added. I also agree that most classics are not series, but I think this book could be a great classic.

  11. I think that this book was very good but i dont think that it will be a classic. The story is very far fetched and to be honest doesnt have a lesson that I can see being taught in a english class. I thought that the story was very good and had tons of twists and turns. I was never bored with this book. Considering that the year of the book was 2042 I dont think that this book will be timeless. Even though the story says that they stoped counting years.

  12. maybe but the tittle for a "classic" novel change every year making it very difficult to have a book become a classic novel but personally i think this book is a great contender for the classic tittle
