Scythe 3/Challenger Deep 3

What components does your book have to make it a page-turner?  Or was this book a little slow to get started?  Was there a point where you just couldn't put it down?  Or did you struggle getting through it?  Please provide examples.

  1. The page-turning element for me is the main character, Caden. His thought process is, for lack of a better term, intriguing. Reading through the way he thinks about situations is enough to keep me reading and analyzing. Being a paranoid schizophrenic, he often comes to conclusions that make no logical sense to anyone else, but to him are perfectly logical. He sees things in people's eyes that make him think they're conspiring to harm him. Caden is an artist, and when it describes him drawing, it's described as him feeling an urge to get his thoughts out of his head and onto paper. Overall, Caden is really the element that makes this book as interesting as it is.

  2. What made this book a page turner for me was all the action. There was never really a moment where the characters would be doing nothing. The apprentices would be training one moment, and then be told they have to glean real people the next. There was always a problem that had to be solved, which kept the book moving along. I would say at the end was when I really didn't want to put the book down, but throughout the whole book I also just wanted to keep reading.

  3. What made this story a page- turner for me is the relationships in the book. The relationships that Citra has are very wholesome, like the one with her brother, or Scythe Faraday, or Rowan, and even Scythe Curie. However, Rowans relationships were not so great, after Rowan was taken as an apprentice with Scythe Goddard everything kind of went downhill for him. Although I'm glad he soon enough became friends with Volta. There was always a problem going on that they had to fix which made it more and more interesting by the minute.

    1. I think the relationships in this book were very intriguing. There was a lot of you can't do this, which made you want to keep reading, because you knew how badly the characters wanted to.

    2. I also agree with how Citra had better relationships with people than Rowan did. I think it's good that Rowan did have Volta, but in the end when he lost, I think it could have led off of how his relationship was with Scythe Goddard, and how much Rowan was like him.

    3. I also think the relationships in this book made it very interesting. They were always told no and it made it interesting because you wanted to see how far the characters would go to be together.

    4. I agree. We got to see a lot of different kinds of situations and relationships which what is so interesting. There's something for everyone I think all wrapped up in a well written book.

    5. I never thought of that aspect. I think it's a good balance though all of Citra's relationships being wholesome while Rowans are rough but seeing how Rowan is kind of wholesome with Citra is very cute and adds a whole new perspective to the book.

  4. What made this book a page-turner for me was the action. I liked how I never knew what spontaneous thing Rowan or Citra would do next. There was many little adventures in this book and you never knew what they would do next. I did not have a hard time getting through this book because right away it started off with both Citra and Rowan finding themselves near a scythe which no one wants to experience. I also really enjoyed finding out how much Citra and Rowan change throughout the book. They both plan secrets and don't tell anyone. You never know what actions they are going to take next.

    1. I agree that I didn't have a hard time reading this book, because of how intriguing it started out as. Right away, Rowan and Citra had found themselves in a situation no one wants to be in, but they made the best of it, and I would think they would have had a little "fun" because they got to experience things, for better or for worse, and meet new people they never would have met.

  5. There was never a slow part in this book. Something was always happening, and I loved it. It was very suspenseful right at the start, wondering what the scythe wanted from Citra and Rowan and it just kept getting better from there.

    1. True; I mention this in my post, but the author does a really great job at worldbuilding. I think this author is well-suited for the fantasy / sci-fi genre, and I hope to see more in that genre from him.

  6. the book was a page turner for me because there is action, mystery, and suspense. the book I think was a bit too fast to start I would have liked to have more detail of faraday faking his death. I always wanted to keep reading. it was also pretty easy to read and not too much struggle.

    1. I also wanted more insight on Faradays death it might be in the 2nd book, but they could've added a chapter of Citra and Faraday talking at his new house I really would've enjoyed reading that cause I love their relationship. Plus, the action scenes were very captivating, and I honestly got a little scared reading of what would happen at the conclaves.

  7. Page turner all the way, for sure. The author knows how to write. His world-building is skillful. He reveals each part of the world one at a time, in a way so that each is special and incredibly provoking. For example, when he reveals the job of the Scythe in the beginning, the reader is amazed and imagines the scene with vivacity. However, as Scythe jobs become more common, they are explained with less time and detail, and more is taken in the intermixing of the characters and other parts of the world. Through this, the author does a fantastic job at making the story exciting the whole way through.

  8. For me, Challenger Deep was a little slow to get started at the begging when Caden is going through day-to-day life I felt confused as to where the story was going. Once Caden was sent to the mental hospital I could not put the book down. After realizing that the characters on the ship in the caded mind are representative of how he sees the people in his life and how he comes to understand their struggles. I felt like without Caden being an interesting storyteller this book would have been extremely slow and the story would have been sad and less about the positive notes of recovery.

  9. For me, this book is definitely a page turner. The plot switches up so many times and the dual perspective also keeps things interesting. There was always something big happening or some new element to the futuristic world. The ending I couldn't put it down and I think I read the last 100 pages all in one sitting. Between Scythe Faraday's return and the death of Scythe Goddard I was in absolutely involved. Whenever Citra and Rowan were near each other I had to keep reading because I missed the dynamic of them being together so much, plus I was also rooting for their relationship.

  10. This book was and wasn't a page turner. I think the only reason I wasn't as into it was only because of the futureisticness of it. Since the book was so well written though it was a page turner, I liked reading the parts at the conclave picturing Rowan and Citra's emotions as well as the other scythes turmoil. There was always something happening in the book that kept me on the edge of my seat. I was especially excited to read when finding out what Citra and Rowans test was and the winter conclave i knew it said Citra had aa plan, but I would've honestly thrown the book if I found out Rowan died in the end. And the kid's relationship while not much of one they were so connected to each other despite not talking. I would've liked to see Citra and Rowan try to solve Faraday's "death" together i think the could've really elevated the storyline.

  11. I thought this book was super easy to get through. I thought that it was a very great page turner. I found it hard to put down. The whole book there was always something going on. Between Rowan and Citra's training and all the scythe drama. I found it super easy to get through. I hated that we thought people were dead and then they werent. however i did like that Goddard and his group were killed and that rowan is scythe lucifer and is taking down all the bad scythes.
