The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo 2

Do you believe in 100 years, this novel will be considered a "classic"?  Will it stand the test of time and be something that students will be reading in an English class of the future?  Why or why not?

  1. I think in 100 years this book will be a classic. The story opens up about what it was like to be in Hollywood in the 1950s that you had to hide who you are just to get by. throughout the book Evelen is forced to do things that she does not want to do this causes her to lose her sense of self which is something I feel everyone can and will be able to relate to for a long time to come.

    1. I agree that it will be a classic, and also that Evelyn was forced to do things that she might not have wanted to do, which made a great impact on her life. Feeling like she was someone, but not being able to act like it, just because it wasn't accepted in their society yet.

    2. I agree I feel a lot of people in this time feel the pressure to do whatever they can to protect themselves and their friends but by reading this book they could maybe see a different light on certain situations. People protecting themselves and reputation will never really go away so this book provides a perfect example of that.

  2. I think this book could be a classic because I feel that some people in the future may definitely be able to relate to how she felt; the need to hide who she really was for the reason of fear of what others might think of her.

    2. I agree, especially as the topic of gay relationships gets even more normalized. Everyone will be able to relate to this book in one way or another through her multiple life experiences.

  3. I think there is definitely a possibility that this book could be considered a classic. It takes place at during a time where you had to do certain things, or something was accepted. I feel like people will be able to relate to this in future, and it could maybe help them with feelings that they are feeling or like they are lost as a person.

    1. Yes, I definitely agree with this statement 100% future people scared of being themselves can read this book and not necessarily not be scared but feel more comfortable with their identity.

    2. I'm not 100% sure this book will become a classic, but I do think there might be a possibility. With all of the topics that connect with society today, I do think that there is a chance it will become a classic.

  4. This book could definitely be considered a classic and could be read 50-100 years down the road. People will always be interested in the 1950s era and aesthetic so people will definitely read this book to sort of relate to that time. Plus, this story is also loosely based off Marilyn Monroe so future teens could be more interested to read it based on that fact alone. This book has a lot of spectacular elements that could make people read it, but I think the best one is the gay plotline. With having a gay plotline, it invites a whole new audience and would make people want to read about the start of aids/ gay love in a time where it really wasn't acceptable which is portrayed in this novel.

    2. I agree the fact that the book takees place in the past just makes me think that it could be considered a classic even more. It covers so manyy topics that are talked about now and ere not back when they were happening to Evelyn.

    3. I've actually read that the character was not based off of Marilyn Monroe, but popular actress, Elizabeth Taylor. Elizabeth Taylor was an old Hollywood starlette who had exactly seven husbands. She was also often remarked for her looks. One movie critic said she "is rapturously beautiful... I hardly know or care whether she can act or not" (Agee).

  5. No, mainly because romance books arent as popular as they used to be so i think that the popualrity of romance is going to keep going down in popularity so in my opiinion this book wouldnt be conciderd a classic. Will students be reading this in english class in the future probably not because book that we read in english class are book that changed history and stuff like that this book (at least i think) hasnt changed history.

  6. I believe this book could be considered a classic in 100 years. It carry's drama and glamour as it tells a story in old Hollywood. Society has always been intrigued by celerity icons such as Marilyn Monroe, and this story has just that. It goes through incredible hardships while introducing a relatively new topic, LGBTQ relationships. The way this book goes about sharing Evelyn's gay relationship is a great example of how it should be done in my opinion. It isn't the big overarching conflict all the time, but it is enough to introduce readers and understand how Evelyn, Celia, and Harry feel as the world around them argues back. As the conversation about openly gay relationships opens up I believe that this book would be a great example and easily pass the test of time. I think it's a story that anyone can find something they enjoy in, and it's an overall very well written book.

  7. More than any other story I've read so far, this book has the potential to be a classic. It displays very concisely how women were viewed in the mid-90's, more as objects to be possessed by their husbands rather than people with internal experiences. It shows that many women had to rely entirely on their looks and bodies in order to achieve fame. While I'm conflicted on how this narrative paints women in positions of power, I view it as an overall good to show that these things did happen. It serves as a window into the past through a modern lens.

    1. I agree I think that this book shows how women and a industry that was dominated by men and controled by men were handled. Even when Evelyn was bringing in more money then Don they still kept him and sent Evelyn off to another company with the intention of ruining her career.

    2. I also think this story has more potential than any other book we have read so far. i also agree with your last line. many topics in today's society are revealed in this book just through an older lens.

  8. In 100 years I do think that this book will be a classic. More so than any other book that we have read. I think that it covers a lot of things from the past in modern time and goes over topics that are more talked about today. I think thaat this book is a very good example of what it might have been like for someone who was considered differnent and it had a great lesson of fighting for what you want out of yourself. I think that if this book were ttaught in a english class in the future there will obviouslyy be some people who dont agreee with Evelyn but this book does teach a good message and I do think that it should be taught in a english class to give everyone a example of what it was like in so many of the situations that Evelyn was put into.

    1. Although you have great reasoning, I don' think this book will become a classic because it lacks an artfulness. Although it would be great to teach those themes to a classroom, this book doesn't go into depth enough as I think it should in order to become a class. This book is fun, but it is not among high literature.

  9. Yes, I do think people will read this for years on and it might be considered a classic, but I think if it was actually based on a real celebrity, it would get a lot more attention. Other than that, though the book was really good because it talks about a Hollywood star in the fifties and the struggles she went through and how hard it was to be your true self. It shows how different, and the same times were from back then to now.

  10. I do not think it will become a classic. Although it covers a variety of modern themes and it has a movie contract with Netflix, it is not masterfully crafted as most classics are. I say this for a few reasons.
    1) It doesn't cover its themes in depth. It covers a variety of issues, but none of them (other than love) are looked into with enough depth and knowledge to make it truly impactful. One theme I was hoping would be elaborated was the relationship between reality vs. media perception. However, it was not as deep as I wished it to be. Because of this, the book serves more as temporary entertainment rather than impactful literature.
    2) Monique's own life story distracts from the action and it feels plopped in. If there was a way it could be skillfully incorporated, I would like to see Monique's relationship with her father more in depth and included more frequently. However, with the way it was written, Evelyn's connection to Monique feels cheaply done, and perhaps Monique would be better with less of a backstory. And her unforgiveness at the end it totally unnecessary.
    3) The writing style feels amateur. The reactions and wording is rudimentary--and not in a stylish way. For example, when Monique explained her reactions to Evelyn's news of her dad, she explained them in a very cheap way that was hard to listen to.
However, I am only a teenager whose read a few classic novels, and I could be wrong. Perhaps the novel will become classic.

  12. I think this book has a possibility for becoming a classic. Many topics portrayed in this book are very common in today's society. However, I don't think this book will be read in English classes. Since the characters are mainly adults and even when Evelyns story began she was still 17 or 18. I think this book will commonly be read by many adults for years to come.

  13. i dont think this book will be a classic because it is set in the 1950s and i think that it would need to be in a more recent because could relate more to there issues instead of issues from over 70 years ago. and because it is about someone who is famous and has the entire worlds pressure rather than someone from a small town where no one would even know if they were gay besides there family.
