What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel?  How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

Comments

  1. This novel is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because of its main focuses and how it goes about telling the story. There are many twists and turns in this book, keeping things very active, and the action starts almost immediately. There's also an overarching lesson of heroism and selflessness while still feeding readers some, often intense, gore. It stays present through the story of a not uncommon kidnapping, and each chapter can hit close to home based off of other real-life horror stories we see on the news. It brings the realism and strong descriptors needed to make a novel good and I'd say it's a great example of what action/thriller books should be like today.

This novel keeps you interested the whole time and is very thrilling to read. This novel has kept me interested from the first page to the last. It has many twist and turned that are very unexpected throughout the book. This book is very relatable to todays world. We see very similar things on the news which make this book great. This book has really strong characters that teach many lessons throughout. Darby never gives up and it inspires many others who have read the book to do the same.

    1. I can also see how relatable this book is to our world today, especially through news horror stories. I think because Darby is so strong willed she is able to teach every reader a lesson about standing up for what they believe in and being courageous even if it's scary.

    2. I agree. I thought that this book was very relatable and relevant. I liked that I could relate to it and understood all the things she was talking about. I liked that Darby stood her ground and didn't let anyone push her around. I hated though that she was just so unlucky.

    3. Yes, it was so unfair what Darby was dealt and how everything turned on her. When another thing got continuously worse for Darby I just thought really?? you've got to be kidding me but that's honestly what made the book more compelling.

    1. I agree with the part about how books like this are getting popular. Gore and strong violence are being more normalized throughout the media because we have grown desensitization's to it. For better or worse I think this type of thing will become more normalized in future years.

  4. This book is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because the main character is extremely self-aware even in these extreme situations she finds herself in she understands that things are bigger than her. it feels like the she thinks in a similer way to how our generation would think. I feel that's what makes this book stand out to me.

    1. I agree. Darby says she shouldn't be the one in this situation, but I personally think that she was pretty good fit. She thought things threw even if her plan wasn't the way things played out. I think this is a good example of contemporary young adult literature.

  5. the book is contemporary young adult literature because you can actually be put in this position and its a relatable book. She had no idea what to do in the situation she was in and yet she got out of it, with jay too. It took a lot for her to keep going especially of how hurt she was and how traumatized she probably was.

    1. I agree, Darby and Jay were put in a very dire situation that they both made the best out of. This situation was very traumatizing with just the amount of injuries Darby left with alone will make an impact on her that she will never forget. Anyone who comes out of any traumatizing situation will relate to this book and Darby especially.

  6. I think that this book is a good example of contemporary young adult literature. The characters were easily relatable. I think that it had some recent references and I felt that in a way I could relate to. I don't know about other people but I loved that this book got right into the plot line and was full of plot twists. I don't think people have a lot of patience today and if you don't have any than this is the book for you. I was never bored and I think that it made a good piece of literature. It kinda scared me that this is a realistic situation. I never thought that it would turn into human trafficking but it is a real problem and could actually happen.

    1. I was actually surprised how soon the story got to finding Jay. I was expecting another chapter that would introduce the characters more or set up foreshadowing before the cage was discovered, but I like that the story got right into it. In the end it made sense that we would come to learn about the side characters as the tension is rising.

    2. This book definitely has lots of plot twists and cut to the main points right away, and
I actually liked that too. I also never got bored when reading this book. I think it's interesting to see a problem that can occur any day, and to read about it and just hear how bad it is.

  7. I think this book is a good example of contemporary young adult literature. Most teens today their favorite genre of book is a mystery, and this particular mystery book is written fairly well. Kidnapping is I would say not a thing in everyday life but is a very common thing in Iowa. So, reading about Jay along with Darby and their journey through this book and how their so young really makes it contemporary. Also, with the family issues that Darby is dealing with in this book can be really relatable.

    1. I wouldn't call kidnapping a very common thing in Iowa. Iowa is actually on the low for child abductions and missing person cases. I think that the fact that it's so uncommon is part of what the author is trying to prove to us; that even though it's so unlikely, there is a possibility.

    2. I think the fact that they still fought so hard considering how young they were, really makes the book great. I also found that the family issues Darby had could definitely be relatable.

  8. I felt like this book would make sense in a different era as much as it does today. Kidnapping and psychopathic killer cases have always been very rare, so I don't think the subject-matter is unique to its setting. The book is contemporary simply because of its setting. The modern setting helps tie elements into the plot, but I think the author also used it to prove that no one is safe from dangerous situations--despite what technology we have to prevent it. For example, even though Darby had a phone and a car, she wasn't able to call for help or escape. Those are the only aspects I see where the contemporary setting has a purpose.

  9. I think this book is a good example of contemporary young adult because it is fast paced and can be related to things happening it today's world. There is many twists and turns keeping the story going. It is relatable because there are kidnappings all around the world. I feel like there is people like Darby who are fighting for other people. Overall, I think Darby is a relatable character because she represents the characteristics of strong willed, brave, and strong. I don't know if many people would be put in the situation she was put in, but I think how she reacted added so much to the story. Although this book as a lot of gore, I think it shows a very good thriller/horror story.

  10. I think this is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because of the events taking place. There are kidnappings happening today, just like this one, maybe without a 'Darby' to rescue them. I also think that Darby's character can be relatable to some people; she didn't have a close relationship with her mom and is now feeling guilty about it. Overall, this was a well-paced, great novel.
