What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel? How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

Do you believe in 100 years, this novel will be considered a "classic"? Will it stand the test of time and be something that students will be reading in an English class of the future? Why or why not?
Firstly, the novel doesn't condescend to its target audience, and it writes the characters in a way that makes them relatable, even if you've never experienced the situation they're in. It represents contemporary literature in a good way, it addresses the issue of mental illness directly and doesn't shy away from the issue. The novel being based on the experiences of someone who was a paranoid schizophrenic when they were a teenager lends an air of credibility to the events described, making them more believable.

DeleteThe book Scythe has lots of exciting action and plot twists. It doesn't really have a targeted audience, as I thought it wouldn't be very enjoyable, but I found it very good. It focuses a lot on other things but relating to today there is problems in it focusing on relationships, and character development. It has problems that focus on the future, which is when the book takes place. The book talks about things from the "past" such as the flu, and recognizes it as something worse then what they are doing now in the "present"
ReplyDeleteI also thought is wasn't going to be enjoyable, but i thought it was very good! I would recommend this book to anyone. I also thought it focused a lot on relationships and character development.

DeleteThe book has a pretty good scandal too it. It has twists and turns, and you never know who to trust in the book. The narrator talks about them in a sense that makes them both relatable and different to teenagers today. It's a good example of contemporary literature because of the technological advancements and the way their social life is. There is so much more meaning to the book when you really look at it.

DeleteI agree that there is a lot of technological advancements and how relatable Rowan and Citra can be to people today. There is a lot of people who are struggling with doing things they don't want to do but this book could show them no matter how hard it is they can still over come it.
DeleteI agree this story had scandals and plot twists that I didnt expect. Like all the scythe drama of Curie and Faraday actually being a couple. I allso enjoyed that the characters where teenagers because it made them easier to relate to and route for.
DeleteThis novel was a very fun read. I enjoyed the action and thrill of it. I think this book is an example of contemporary young adult because of the relationship between Citra and Rowan and also he character development between both of them. I also think its and example of it because we never know what the future holds. It could become a lot better like many people in Scythe think that being immortal is better, or it could grow worse. We never know what might happen and what the future will look like.
ReplyDeleteI also thought this novel was very fun to read. I think the character development between Rowan and Citra also helped make this book young adult literature. We also don't know what the future holds which is the same as in the book, and many people could argue how Scythes could be a good thing, or not.

DeleteI think what mainly made this book a good example of contemporary young adult literature was showing how the characters developed through the story. After only a year, Citra and Rowan changed and matured so much.
ReplyDeleteI loved this aspect of the book. We saw characters development coordinating with their new lives that really made the book stand out to me!

ReplyDeleteThis book does do a great job at moving the plotline and providing lots of action and mystery. I honestly wasn't expecting there to be many action scenes, but after finishing it, the fights and action-packed scenes were my favorite.
DeleteI think what makes this novel relatable to modern themes is the usage of AI and other technology. While in other dystopian stories, people fear AI, in this story, it is a just, generous system that progresses mankind (or at least, that's how people perceive it). In modern times, people usually distrust AI; Self-driving cars haven't seen significant production due to this reason. However, maybe over time people will come to accept it as the society does in this book.
ReplyDeleteAnother idea brought from the book is the concept of technology making people loose purpose. I believe this is relatable in some degree to a modern audience. When everything is made easier and less painful, there is less to grow and people feel less purpose.
I think both of those themes perfectly represent contemporary literature.
I agree! I think this book could be a good guide to part of what our world will look like in the future with ever growing technology.
DeleteTo picture in the book scythe Curie only gleaning people who loose purpose is incredibly sad and while not talked about much provides a significant amount of emotion, I think the story needs. I think struggling teens could really like this futuristic world where life is easier.
DeleteI think that challenger deep is a good example of contemporary young adult literature. I believe that through Caden's struggle with mental illness neal Shusterman can tell a story that needs to be heard. This novel's main topic is mental illness which made it very interesting because as Caden works through his mental illness the story's message becomes clear and I feel that this book did a great job of keeping me invested in the story.
ReplyDeleteI think this book is an okay representation of contemporary young adult literature. Since the book takes place in an alternate reality it is a bit hard for teenagers to relate to killing but besides that seeing Rowan and Citra interact in difficult situations is something people would like to read. I like how while set in the future it still referenced things present in today's world like apple and having the cold. But seeing how the kids react to death and being controlled is very interesting and represents young adult literature.
ReplyDeleteI think this novel is a great example of contemporary literature through its use of futuristic technology and moral struggles. Scythe does a great job of building this very imaginable futuristic would while still referencing things we understand and can all relate to. I also love the journal entries from different scythes where we get to see different peoples perspectives on the world around them and how they interpret their job of essentially killing people. We get a glimpse into forbidden feelings, and the overall guilt of their job can be related to many different things we feel today.
ReplyDeleteyes, I agree. The journal entries provided great incite to see how they interacted with others vs their thoughts to themselves. I think the futuristic technology can be very interesting to young adults and how maybe the technology in the book could be a real thing.
DeleteI think that this book is a great example of contemporary young adult literature. I think that the characters ages and some of the things that they go through make this story relatable. I think that some of the story line makes it young adult but also pushing the edge of adult. With the gleanings and everything. I think that it is also a great exanple of todays literature because this book had a story line that I would usually not want to read. It wasnt the romance book that I am usually used to reading but it had that slight bit of romance connection and that I was ruiting for. I really wanted them to get together. Overall this book was a very good example of contemporary young adult literature.
